The 5 Best Videos Of The Week
Earlier today, I posted a bigass list of my favorite music videos of the year. That should honestly be enough to keep your optic nerves crammed full for the day. But if you’re done with it, or you’re somehow low on viewing options this weekend, please note that plenty of other good music videos came out this week. Five of them are below.
5. Deerhoof – “Breakup Songs” (Dir. Pieter Dirkx)
You might think that spazzy neon art-punk and creeped-out Wicker Man small-town occult evilness would not work together, but you would be wrong. Please do yourself a favor and don’t watch this one while eating.
4. Waxahatchee – “Coast To Coast” (Dir. Ryan Russell)
Just a remarkably pleasant way to spend two minutes. And since it’s Friday afternoon in June, those two minutes may inspire you to spend a few hours this weekend reenacting them. That’s the best-case scenario for this one, anyway.
3. Kurt Vile – “KV Crimes” (Dir. Tom Scharpling)
Once, years ago, I spent an afternoon making fun of the city of Philadelphia on Twitter, and one of the local alt-weeklies devoted an entire page — in the physical paper — to countering my shit-talk. Philly, you see, is the sort of place that will brook no offense, that will present its grungy local signposts as blessings to be honored. Long may Kurt Vile reign as its king.
2. Vampire Weekend – “Diane Young” (Dir. Primo Khan)
The endless parade of indie-celeb cameos, the general air of madcap ridiculousness, and the weed-in-the-saxophone trick are all so overwhelming that you might not notice the whole Last Supper theme at first. But yes, there is a Last Supper theme, and our new messiah wears a ski mask and looks vaguely annoyed at everything.
1. Mykki Blanco – “Initiation” (Dir. Ninian Doff)
At least in terms of doing creepy shit with his face in music videos, Mykki Blanco is our new Aphex Twin.
