Matthew E. White – “Big Love (Hot Chip Remix)”
Richmond, VA gospel-folk-psych-soul crooner Matthew E. White released one of 2012’s best albums, Big Inner, a stunning and sorta miraculous collection that congregated with the lofty (and disparate) likes of Spiritualized, Leonard Cohen, and Terry Reilly. Pretty remarkably, it’s been almost exactly one year (one year plus one day, to be precise) since we first heard album highlight “Big Love,” because today, we’ve got a remix of that very track by none other than Hot Chip. The British indie-dance greats amp up the bassline and beats of the acid-jazzy original, adding delay and skronk and synthetic chirps, making it more club- and drug-appropriate but doing nothing to strip away its ridiculously abundant charms. It’s just a great song, and the remix treats it as such. Listen, check out Cole’s wonderful interview with White, and check tour dates (many with Okkervil River) below.
