Julia Holter – “Maxim’s I”
When I saw Julia Holter perform a midnight set at last year’s Hopscotch Festival, the venue choice of an old church felt truly appropriate. Her music can be so beautiful, her voice so angelic, that it feels like a religious service. Soon we’ll be able to hear Loud City Song, Holter’s third album in three years and first proper studio effort, and we’ve already ready gotten a preview with “World” and “In The Green Wild.” Now we have the second track on the album, “Maxim’s I.”
It’s a testament to the multi-faceted qualities of Holter’s music that when writing about the opening track “World,” Tom described it as “warm,” while it sounded ice cold to me. Her multi-tracked voice was like a little light in the darkness while wordless backing vocals hit unsettling tones that remind me of the sort of stuff Morton Feldman would write in his vocal pieces. On this latest track, clattering percussion gives way to a floating melody. The lovely delivery from Holter even brings to mind the dreamy mist the late Trish Keenan used to conjure in Broadcast. It’s a gorgeous thing to get lost in, and if these first two tracks are any sign, it will all sound even better in the full context of the record. Listen below and check out Holter’s tour dates.
