On first listen of the refrain to the new F&M single -- "vanilla, strawberry, knickerbocker glory" -- I had hopes we had just met the world's best motorik-infused tune about triumphant, flavored underpants. Because there was a void in my life for that. Commenter Joey S. set it straight, though, telling us "a knickerbocker glory is a sundae thats popular in the u.k." Although I still like my reading better, he's right, and here's the video to prove it. The "Knickerbocker" clip is a little like "Konichiwa Bitches" in that every lyric gets corresponding, literal imagery. As the Japanese-but-not-Japanese band name would suggest, Fujiya & Miyagi enjoy playing with words -- so the first person singular is an eyeball with one pass, a needle's eye with another; the ice cream and Lena Zavaroni, however, stay true to form.
They make good videos, although I still think they could have done one image of a pair of knickers standing on the Olympics medal stand. Probably why I'm not a video director.Fujiya's next LP, Lightbulbs is out in the US on 9/16 via Deaf, Dumb + Blind. And then there will be a tour:
