Kelela – “Enemy” (Prod. Nguzunguzu)
Last time Kelela graced the pages of Stereogum, it was on assist duty, supplying vox for Teengirl Fantasy track “EFX.” She’s come into her own this year, first appearing on fellow Fade To Mind signee Kingdom’s smooth “Bank Head” from his Vertical XL EP. That cut will appear on Kelela’s own mixtape Cut 4 Me, out this October, which also features this track, “Enemy.” Produced by labelmates Nguzunguzu, the kiss-off song is brimming with machine gun-like synths, all the percussion sparse and dark, as if witch-house was following the natural path from industrializing southern rap to doing the same for snap music, but with, of course, Kelela’s R&B flair. Both collaborations are prime examples of what’s to come from the tape, particularly Kingdom handles a majority of the production with a hefty amount of beats from Night Slugs-ers Bok Bok, Jam City, and Girl Unit.
