David Yow – “Five Directors’ Interpretations Of Opening Suite” Video (Stereogum Premiere)
Scratch Acid/Jesus Lizard/Qui frontman David Yow, one of pigfuck’s most exhilarating nihilistic yowlers, released a solo album called Tonight You Look Like A Spider this year. The first track is a five-part, 13-minute instrumental called “Opening Suite.” For the video, five directors including Jennifer Lynch (David Lynch’s daughter), Califone’s Tim Rutili, Jared Varava, Adam Harding, and Todd Adam Phillips each tackled one of the movements. The resulting short film is a bizarre compendium of off-kilter inspiration, and you can watch it below.
Tonight You Look Like A Spider is out now via Joyful Noise. In other Yow news, two books are forthcoming. One is a collection of cat portraits (!) called Copy Cat: And A Litter Of Other Cats, which you can pre-order here. The other is a Jesus Lizard coffee table book (!) called The Jesus Lizard Book that will include “photography, art, and other imagery,” writing from all four band members and a 7-inch of unreleased songs. It’s coming out in March 2014, but it looks like if you pre-order it here, where the “Opening Suite” film is also available for purchase, it’ll ship just in time to give that Jesus Lizard stan in your life the merriest Christmas ever.
