Krill – “Steve Hears Pile In Malden And Bursts Into Tears” (Stereogum Premiere)
Earlier this year Band To Watch Krill put up a little self-released album for $6.66 (you had to pay more, though, for the special edition, which crammed a jump drive in a ball of gourmet mozzarella cheese). As the year wore on Lucky Leaves never left my iPhone (it still hasn’t) and gradually grew into one of my favorite albums of the year, and Krill became one of my favorite live bands. Now they’re back with a new EP, the amazingly titled Steve Hears Pile In Malden And Bursts Into Tears. In case you don’t know, Malden is a town north of Boston, Pile are perhaps the great unsung heroes of the Boston music scene, and Steve is the unfortunate protagonist of this “failed concept album.” The story follows Steve, a huge fan of Pile who dreams of making something worthy of them, only to come to the realization that he is actually a character in a Pile song. Below you can find the title track of the EP streaming. It’s hilarious, it’s existentially depressing, it’s a love letter. It’s great. In other words, it’s Krill.
