Marram – “Falling From The Sun” (Feat. Jarvis Cocker And Margaret Bennett) (Stereogum Premiere)
Last year, the Scottish arts collective Transgressive North initiated the Everything Is New Project, a benefit for children from India’s “untouchable” Dalit class. The project culminates this month with the release of two all-star records featuring top musicians from Scotland and around the world. Here are the details:
Sun Choir is an album of new music by Edinburgh-based band Marram, recorded with and for the Light Of Love Children’s Choir, and featuring collaborations with renowned musical personalities from around the world, including Jarvis Cocker, Owen Pallett, doseone, White Hinterland, and Margaret Bennett.
BOATS – a 29-track double album featuring exclusive tracks from Four Tet, Dan Deacon, Bear in Heaven, Califone, Deerhoof, El Guincho, Gang Gang Dance, Lucky Dragons, Julian Lynch, Max Tundra, No Age, The Ruby Suns, Rustie, Son Lux, Sun Airway, A Sunny Day in Glasgow, Taken By Trees, Jamie Stewart (Xiu Xiu), YACHT, and many, many more. Each artist on BOATS created their songs using samples of the Light Of Love Children’s Choir, originally recorded for Marram’s Sun Choir.
Today we’ve got one of Marram’s Sun Choir songs, a glimmering new wave epic called “Falling From The Sun” featuring Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker and Scottish renaissance woman Margaret Bennett. Transgressive North describes the song as such:
In “Falling from the Sun,” Marrram and the Light of Love Childrens Choir reinterpret the Icarus myth as a glorious and empowering story of trying, failing and trying again. The last song on Sun Choir, (and the conceptual twin of album opener “Icarus Hope Choir”), “Falling from the Sun” is the only chance you may ever get to hear indie-hero and Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker duet with celebrated Scottish folk singer Margaret Bennett. Listen as Marram, Jarvis Cocker, and Margaret Bennett help the children of the Light of Love Children’s Home learn how to fly.
It’s a wonderful song for an exceptional cause. Listen below, where you’ll also find the Everything Is New Project trailer.
