GEMS – “Don’t Cry” (Seal Cover)
The ongoing reclamation of yesterday’s pop radio hits by today’s ostensibly “indie” acts continues today with GEMS’ cover of Seal’s 1995 single “Don’t Cry,” the 100th most popular song of 1996 per Billboards’s year-end Hot 100 figures. GEMS, a D.C. duo specializing in darkly moody synth music with pop and R&B overtones, released the cover in the wake of last fall’s debut EP Medusa.
