Chvrches – “Bela Lugosi’s Dead” (Bauhaus Cover)

Vampire Academy soundtrack

We’ve heard them cover songs by Whitney Houston and East 17 and Janelle Monáe, that Scottish synthpop trio Chvrches are good at covering other people’s songs. And now they’ve got another one in their arsenal. On the soundtrack to the new teenage-bloodsucker movie Vampire Academy, Chvrches take on the Bauhaus goth classic “Bela Lugosi’s Dead,” swapping out the tingly severity of the original for an ethereal stillness. That song has quite a distinguished vampire-movie history; it’s about cinema’s most famous Dracula, obviously, but it’s also the song that Bauhaus performed at the beginning of Tony Scott’s amazingly goofy David Bowie/Catherine Deneuve/Susan Sarandon joint The Hunger. Hear the Chvrches version below.
