Last week we learned that Neil Young’s “low-tech” new album A Letter Home and his high-tech digital music service Pono would both be arriving in March; since then word’s come out that Jack White’s Third Man Records will release the album, and Rolling Stone speculates that it was recorded on “a 1947 Voice-o-Graph machine located at Third Man’s Nashville headquarters.” Now Young has released a live recording of the Ragged Glory track “Mother Earth” captured during the final stop of his recent Honour The Treaties tour, matched with footage of nature’s majesty being destroyed by industry and whatnot. It’s exactly the sort of song you’d expect a concerned aging hippie to write about the dangers of not knowing what you’ve got ’til it’s gone. “Mother Earth” is as slow and gentle as a lullaby, so much so that it might put you to sleep — although if Young had his way it would be a wake-up call.
