Early last month, we wrote about “Blow Your Trumpets Gabriel,” the first track to be premiered from Behemoth’s forthcoming LP, The Satanist — their tenth album overall, first in five years, and first since frontman Nergal battled and beat cancer. I wrote enthusiastically about the track, but even so, it felt a bit anticlimactic, a build-up with no release. I was pretty sure it was intended as a trailer rather than a single, and additional album tracks would indeed provide a payoff. The second Satanist track to be premiered, “Ora Pro Nobis Lucifer,” more than makes good on the promise of “Gabriel.” It’s all climax, all crushing blows, as satisfying a song as can be crammed into five and a half minutes. The very best of Behemoth may be a decade-plus in the past, but the band sounds as vital here as they have at any point, ever. Check it out.
