Hear Suzanne Vega’s New Song That Samples 50 Cent
Tales From The Realm Of The Queen Of Pentacles is Suzanne Vega’s first album of new material in seven years. It follows her four-volume Close-Up series, which offered stripped-down takes on songs from her catalog, on her own label Amanuensis Productions. This new collection stands in stark contrast to the hushed intimacy of those re-recordings. With accompaniment from a dozen noteworthy contributors (including Tony Levin, Jay Bellerose, longtime collaborator Gerry Leonard) it’s probably Vega’s richest and most sonically diverse album. There’s even a sample of 50 Cent’s “Candy Shop” on “Don’t Uncork What You Can’t Contain,” a song that also namechecks Macklemore and finds Vega sorta rapping. It’s her first experiment with sampling, but given that “Tom’s Diner” has been sampled by everyone from 2Pac to Drake to Lil’ Kim to Yo Gotti, it’s probably overdue. Listen below.
