Panda Bear Preps New LP Tentatively Titled Panda Bear Meets The Grim Reaper
Other than his appearance on Daft Punk’s “Doin’ It Right,” Panda Bear stayed pretty quiet last year. But the Animal Collective member is now at work on a new solo album, the follow-up to his 2011 LP Tomboy. He’s recording it in Lisbon, his adapted hometown, with Sonic Boom, the psych-rock baron and former Spacemen 3 member who mixed Tomboy. The new album has the working title Panda Bear Meets The Grim Reaper, he’s hoping to have it out next year on Domino, and he’s already divulged a few details.
Talking to Under The Radar, Panda reports that his new album is “more linked to” 2007’s Person Pitch, his undisputed masterpiece, than it is to Tomboy. He also names 9th Wonder, the North Carolina rap producer and former Little Brother member, as an inspiration. Panda says that he’s working more with samples than he did on Tomboy, though he’s often making the sounds that he’s sampling himself: “The drum stuff, I feel, is a real focal point of the music. It’s heavier and break-centric music.” And he says that even though he’s putting it together using computers, he likes to keep “a certain imperfection” in the music.
