Oneohtrix Point Never – “Music For Steamed Rocks”
Brooklyn synth wizard Oneohtrix Point Never works in a decidedly non-commerical field — queasy drone — but he has still figured out a few interesting ways to get that money. In the past few years, he’s put together a few commissioned musical works for interested parties, and a forthcoming 12″ EP will collect three of those. Commissions I includes Daniel Lopatin’s take on the pop classic “I Only Have Eyes For You,” done for a Doug Aitken museum installation in Washington, D.C., and “Meet Your Creator,” which Lopatin put together for the ad agency Saatchi & Saatchi. And below, you can hear “Music For Steamed Rocks,” a seven-and-a-half-minute interpretation of Polish composer Witold Lutoslawski’s Preludes, which Lopatin did for a Polish Icons series at Kraków’s Sacrum Profanum festival. It is very pretty in ways that Lopatin’s regular work generally is not.
Commissions I is out 4/19, Record Store Day, on Warp.
