Triptykon – “Breathing” & “Boleskine House”
I’m at SXSW right now — I literally just got back to the hotel after a blistering set by Power Trip — and in most cases, I’d let new song premieres wait till next week, when I’m back at my desk at Stereogum HQ in NYC, without the distraction and demands of this ridiculous event. But damn, this one CANNOT WAIT. The second album from Triptykon, Melana Chasmata, is out next month, and it is far and away one of the best metal albums 2014 will produce. Triptykon, if you don’t already know, is the band fronted by Tom G. Warrior, formerly of the timeless, massively influential Celtic Frost. Triptykon’s 2010 debut, Eparistera Daimones, was an absolute monster, a worthy follow-up to CF’s final LP, 2006’s towering Monotheist. But Melana Chasmata is bigger and better than that album, and perhaps the single best album released to date by Warrior. THIS IS NO SMALL FEAT. Tom G. is one of the few remaining legends of the proto-extreme era still producing vital work, still charting a course for metal. I don’t think I’m exaggerating in calling it a masterpiece. Anyway, totally unannounced, today Triptykon dropped TWO Melana Chasmata tracks, “Breathing” and “Boleskine House.” I’ll write about them (and the album) at greater length as soon as I’m able, but for now, you have to just play the fuck out of these two songs till the arrival of full-length. Gargantuan, world-altering metal. LISTEN.
Melana Chasmata is out 4/15 via Century Media.
