Turn To Crime – “Sunday’s Cool” (Stereogum Premiere)
In keeping with their Ann Arbor roots, the Brooklyn power trio Awesome Color kicked out three albums of fiery Detroit-inspired garage rock jams for Thurston Moore’s Ecstatic Peace label throughout the second half of the aughts and toured with the likes of Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr., and Tyvek. (They were blisteringly bloozy when I saw them open for Dinosaur in Ann Arbor circa 2008.) In the interim since Awesome Color disbanded in 2010, frontman Derek Stanton moved back to Detroit and began fronting a new project called Turn To Crime. What started out as a noise-drone solo affair has evolved into an experimental pop band, and that band is ready to release its debut album. Can’t Love, set for release this July, promises a tracklist split between outré pop tracks and lengthy krautrock excursions. “Sunday’s Cool,” the stuttering, swaying summer stroll of a lead single, is a promising example of the former. It reminds me of the complex yet understated pop-rock Jim O’Rourke was releasing around the turn of the millennium, only more jagged and off-kilter. It’s a pleasant compendium of skewed sunshine and wonky rhythms, and you really ought to check it out.
Can’t Love is out 7/1 via Old Flame Records and Mugg & Bopp. Here’s the tracklist:

02 “Can’t Love”
03 “Sunday’s Cool”
