Meet Antemasque, Mars Volta Co-Leaders’ New Band With Flea
Just last year, things were not all good between Mars Volta/At The Drive-In co-leaders Cedric Bixler Zavala and Omar Rodríguez-López. Last January, the Mars Volta announced their breakup when Bixler Zavala let fly with a series of bitter, wounded tweets, angry that Rodríguez-López had gone off to tour with his new band Bosnian Rainbows: “What am I suppose to do be some progressive house wife that’s cool with watching their partner go fuck other bands? We owe it 2 fans to tour.” But the two have apparently mended their working relationship, and now they’ve started a new band called Antemasque.
The new band also features the beastly former Mars Volta drummer Dave Elitch and Flea, the Mars Volta’s original touring bassist, who is suddenly the busiest slap-bass specialist on the planet. Together, the band announced its existence in a pair of videos that they posted yesterday. And they’ve recorded and already released “4AM,” their debut single, with precious little warning. Check out the song and those in-studio videos below.
“4AM” (which, amazingly, clocks in at less than three minutes) is up for sale at iTunes right now.
