Bry Webb – “Receive Me” (Stereogum Premiere)
Canadian post-punk greats the Constantines — a favorite of mine and of Arcade Fire’s — recently announced a reunion. But frontman Bry Webb is also readying a solo album called Free Will, and today we have a preview in the form of “Receive Me.” In keeping with Constantines’ late-career trajectory, it’s a bluesy shuffle that leans closer to the Springsteen side of Webb’s wheelhouse than the Fugazi side, though those squalls of feedback suggest he hasn’t abandoned his bracing punk tendencies. The sound and feel of this music are unmistakable, especially when Webb raises his voice to a weathered howl. If you’ve been missing him as much as I have, this is straight-up manna. Listen below.
