Damon Albarn Says New Gorillaz Album Almost Definitely Happening, Noel Gallagher Collab A “Distinct Possibility”
Sometimes I think Damon Albarn is trolling me personally. One of the first things I wrote for Stereogum was a Counting Down of his non-Blur projects (it was, in fact, the first installment of that now-regular feature), and I opened it by saying:
“Damon Albarn doesn’t deserve our love. We want Blur and he gives us … anything but.”
That was June 6, 2012 — nearly two full years ago! Last May — LAST MAY — he announced he had finished — FINISHED — recording his solo debut album, which he has now spent four months promoting (not an exaggeration — he’s been leaking stuff from the album since December 11, 2013). His newest promotional gambit is an interview with NME, in which he reveals, among other things:
1. “I can definitely see another Gorillaz-esque record at some point, yeah. That will almost definitely happen. I could put a Gorillaz record out next week; I’ve got enough stuff I haven’t finished.”
2. A collaboration with Noel Gallagher is a “distinct possibility” in future.
Don’t get me wrong, I am stoked about both those things, especially the latter! But just so we’re all on the same page, in late February, he revealed that Blur have recorded 15 new songs — but they’ll stay in the vault till further notice, because, says Damon, “I can’t foresee us in the near future being in a position to finish [an album]. We’re just all doing other stuff.”
I don’t even have words. Trolling? Sure feels like it. You tell me.
