DJ Mustard – “Down On Me” (Feat. Ty Dolla $ign & 2 Chainz)
DJ Mustard’s minimal, clicking, handclap-heavy beats have, over the past couple of years, changed the entire sound of West Coast rap, and they’ve had a pretty big ripple-effect in Atlanta, too. Mustard is also one of the driving creative forces behind 2014’s best rap album, YG’s My Krazy Life. And now he’s going solo, getting ready to release his debut album 10 Summers. Mustard doesn’t rap himself, and his vocal contributions to first single “Down On Me” are limited to some Fatman Scoop-style chanted exhortations on the outro. But he does provide the slinky, uptempo beat, outsourcing vocal duties to frequent collaborator Ty Dolla $ign and recent adapter 2 Chainz. It’s one of the more elegantly constructed strip-club anthems I’ve heard in recent months, and you can give it a listen below.
10 Summers is coming later this year. Download Mustard’s great Ketchup mixtape here.
