Baked – “Mick Jagger” (Stereogum Premiere)
Brooklyn quintet Baked, the latest addition to the Exploding In Sound roster, trades in bleary psych-pop that unfolds like an expansive vision but penetrates like a dead-eyed stare. “Mick Jagger,” the lead single from debut full-length Debt, bares minimal Rolling Stones influence — it’s more like Grizzly Bear meets El Jesus De Magico — but that heavy percussive current that propels the song forward bears at least passing resemblance to all those rumbling drums from “Sympathy For The Devil,” and the vocal performance is swaggering in its own way, more falling-down-drunk than tight-jeans prancer on the prowl. In any case, I’m glad they named a song after Jagger if only for the SEO magnetism that might deliver stray internet wanderers to this band. Baked’s previous material was strong, but this is a magnificent leap forward that has me desperate to hear what else Debt has in store. For now, though, let’s all sit back and enjoy “Mick Jagger” together.
Debt will be out 8/19 on Exploding In Sound. Before that, Baked will hit the road, including a run of shows opening for Titus Andronicus. Tour dates:
