High Ends – “Downtown” (Stereogum Premiere)
Last month Yukon Blonde frontman Jeffery Innes showed off the sounds of his solo project High Ends in the form of a chillwave-infused new wave charmer called “The Weight.” Now comes word that High Ends will release an album called Super Class on Dine Alone Records later this summer. “Downtown,” another selection from the LP, captures a retro-futuristic sound that’s hard to pin down but easy to enjoy — similar in spirit to fellow Vancouver resident Dan Bejar’s Destroyer but not really in sound. At first it reminds me of Arab Strap turned lounge act backed by synth oscillations that sound like billowing smoke, then suddenly it veers into explosive, guitar-heavy dream pop before circling back. It’s fun and fascinating, and you should listen below.
