Lorde Is Taking Majical Cloudz On Tour
Lorde is one of the most powerful forces in pop right now in part because her music appeals across genre lines. Her singles mostly snap and shimmer with mass appeal, but at least part of her stylistic brew is an affinity for rock’s gloomy, goth-oriented side, an affinity that shines through in her visual aesthetic (blacks, whites, and grays) and her occasionally jarring zombie contortions. She made the connection more explicit by guesting on a remix of Son Lux’s “Easy,” and now she’s gone a step further by selecting Majical Cloudz as the opening act for her upcoming North American tour. Devon Welsh’s midnight ruminations seem like exactly the kind of thing Lorde would be compelled by, so in one sense they make perfect sense as tourmates. But in another sense, it will be fun to see how “Childhood’s End” and Welsh’s unsettling stare goes over with Lorde’s audience. Considering how often Kurt Cobain tried to use his influence to show off his favorite musicians, Lorde’s guest spot with Nirvana is making more and more sense.
