“Sad Machine,” the boy-meets-robot love story from EDM wunderkind Porter Robinson’s grandiose electro-pop turn Worlds, was among the most striking statements we’ve heard this year from any musician anywhere. I fawned all over it here and here — and for what it’s worth, the sparkling and expansive teaser track “Sea Of Voices” was spectacular too. Now comes another single from Worlds, and it further demonstrates Robinson’s mastery of these new frontiers.

“Lionhearted,” a collaboration with Swedish indie-pop outfit Urban Cone, inhabits that same sonic universe Robinson established with the last single, grafting his signature electro-house to the space-age synthpop practiced by festival mainstays like Passion Pit and M83. But whereas “Sad Machine” sounded like landing on sex planet, “Lionhearted” feels more like a joyride through the galaxy with “St. Elmo’s Fire” blasting louder than the afterburners. Zane Lowe just called it “the hottest record in the world,” and it’s certainly not hard to imagine “Lionhearted” becoming that kind of hit.

This year at Coachella, the DJ-focused Sahara Tent was often more crowded than the main stages, but the most rapturous reception and biggest crowds were reserved for the likes of Calvin Harris and Disclosure, who brought EDM out of the tents and into a more traditional headliner’s environment. This Worlds material feels like Robinson’s own bid to move from the DJ tent to the main stage — stepping to the mic himself, embracing pop songwriting, and zeroing in on an extremely potent combination of today’s most effervescent sounds.
