Watch Elvis Costello Debut “The Last Year of My Youth” On Letterman
Lana Del Rey was supposed to be the musical guest on last night’s episode of the Late Show With David Letterman, but thanks to a last-minute cancellation, Elvis Costello filled in for her. Playing entirely solo, with just a fuzzed-out electric guitar, Costello played a new song called “The Last Year Of My Youth,” which he’d apparently written just the night before. It’s a big, ragged, anthemic song about getting older, and I found myself enjoying it more than any Costello song in who knows how long. Judging by this, maybe Costello should stop tinkering around with his songs immediately after writing them. Check it out below.
Costello begins an entirely solo tour 6/24-25 at New York’s Carnegie Hall.
