The 5 Best Videos Of The Week
The real best music video of the week is this: the debut effort from Tyler Breeze, bad-guy male model character in WWE’s developmental system, a sort of excessively narcissistic take on pre-personal journey Derek Zoolander. I didn’t put it on this week’s list because it’s not, strictly speaking, a good music video. But if you watch wrestling, it’s fucking awesome. And if you don’t watch wrestling, watch some wrestling. Wrestling is the best. Some days, it’s better than music. Anyway, this week’s picks are below.
5. Kevin Drew – “You In You Were” (Feat. Feist) (Dir. Samir Rehem)
Zach Galifianakis is not funny, and at this point, I’m not convinced he ever was. But in a slow week, this one sneaks in on the strength of Feist’s entrance alone. Because Feist’s entrance is masterful.
4. How To Dress Well – “Face Again” (Dir. Johannes Greve Muskat)
I like how this one goes all-in on its continuing indie-film narrative, but it’s still enough of a music video that it can’t resist the spectacle of Tom Krell taking a break to lip-synch while he’s got just the right level of firelight on his face.
3. Washed Out – “Weightless” (Dir. David Altobelli)
May we all experience misery as cinematically gorgeous as this.
2. Beverly – “Honey Do” (Dir. Hanly Banks)
Teenagers, in their awkward skittish squinty glory, are some of the greatest people in the world, and it’s nice when a music video will just let them be awkward skittish squinty teenagers. This is the sort of thing that can only happen when you say no to the fashion conglomerate that wants to underwrite your music video, or maybe when the fashion conglomerate never comes sniffing around in the first place.
1. Jack White – “Lazaretto” (Dir. Jonas & François)
Every once in a while, Jack White remembers that he’s an absolute motherfucking champion rock star. And when that happens, look out.
