Castanets – “Out For The West” (Stereogum Premiere)
Raymond Raposa has been giving us itinerant folk songs as Castanets since the heyday of freak-folk, but he’s survived and evolved. “Out For The West,” the lead single from Castanets’ upcoming Decimation Blues, provides ample evidence of that metamorphosis. What could have been a gothic fireside strummer instead blooms into an understated but steady digital thump and idiosyncratic horn blasts. Meanwhile Raposa spins a narrative about Vanity Fair, the Portland Trail Blazers, gold rushes, and Harvey Milk. It’s a lovely song that you ought to listen to, so do that below.
Decimation Blues is out 8/19 on Asthmatic Kitty, and Castanets plays the Star Theater in Portland this Saturday 6/14 with Jolie Holland and Jess Williamson.
