Angel Olsen’s stormy, Hank Williams-quoting, ultimately triumphant “Hi-Five,” from her new album Burn Your Fire For No Witness, is one of my favorite indie rock songs of the year; it’s a total masterclass in slow-burn dynamics and evocative vocal control. Last night, she and her band played the song on the Late Show With David Letterman, and Olsen’s icy-intense stage presence came through on TV more clearly than you might expect. Olsen deserves every little bit of success that comes her way, and it’s cool to see her getting a chance to shine on TV. Watch it below.
