FaltyDL – “Some Jazz Shit”
Drew Lustman’s electronic project FaltyDL — opener for Radiohead and James Blake, remixer for Disclosure and the xx — is back with a new album called In The Wild this August. Despite the brainy nature of his work, he seems to be putting the “lust” in Lustman this time around. The first single was called “Do Me,” and he’s posting a series of accompanying videos on PornHub. The short films, a partnership with Chris Shen, are about “examining the spatial and technological reproduction of sound and video.” (See? Brainy too. Although, also about reproduction of a sort.) Meanwhile, Lustman just shared the penultimate track from In The Wild, “Some Jazz Shit.” Unsurprisingly but very satisfyingly, it’s built around an eerie jazz piano sample the likes of which you’d expect to hear in a late-’90s trip-hop or IDM production, or maybe Steve Reich before that. The hiccuping beat is more in the vein of early dubstep, back when the only people who were listening to dubstep were the ones that used to be into trip-hop and IDM and Steve Reich. If we’ve just about exhausted our nostalgia for early ’90s hip-hop and alt-rock, it does seem like we’re due for this sort of thing. That said, In The Wild is not what I’d describe as a retro album. Lustman is blurring lines and bursting with ideas, and he’s making experimental electronic music that anybody can appreciate. Check out “Some Jazz Shit” below.
