GOAT – “Hide From The Sun” (Stereogum Premiere)
Last year, I went to Sweden for the Way Out West festival, and the band that impressed me most was GOAT, the mysterious Swedish band who wear masks and play some frantic percussive combination of acid-spiked psych-rock, groove-centric Afrobeat, dazed metal, euphoric disco, and unearthly funk. I’ve never seen a rock band come as close to D.C. go-go as GOAT came that day, and their 2012 debut album World Music was the sort of bugged-out leftfield discovery that you find out about months after its release and then play so often that you annoy your friends with it. “Dreambuilding,” the band’s follow-up single, was a monster, too. And now they’ve signed to Sub Pop in the U.S., and their sophomore album Commune is coming this fall. The band has a whole back story to delve into; they don’t give their names or reveal their faces, and they claim to be from Korpilombolo, a tiny and isolated Swedish village north of the Arctic Circle. They claim, in fact, to be playing their own traditional village music. But you don’t have to know any of that to appreciate the music, which crosses borders at will and speaks its own language. Below, listen to the beautifully psychedelic first single “Hide From The Sun” and check out the Commune tracklist and GOAT’s tour dates.
