Empire! Empire! (I Was A Lonely Estate) – “If It’s Bad News, It Can Wait” (Stereogum Premiere)
The Michigan husband and wife duo Empire! Empire! (I Was A Lonely Estate) were key figures in the Midwest emo scene long before anybody was talking about an emo revival. They’ve kicked out an enormous number of records over the past half-decade, and they’re about to add to that number with a new LP called You Will Eventually Be Forgotten. “If It’s Bad News, It Can Wait” is a small-scale epic that sounds like a pleasing midpoint between the Get Up Kids and early Built To Spill. It’s a story-song about going on a beach vacation with friends during spring break and tuning out ominous phone calls from back home. Narrative tension and wistful feelings abound. Listen below.
You Will Eventually Be Forgotten is out 8/19 on Topshelf/Count Your Lucky Stars. Pre-order it here. On the same day, the band is also releasing a companion graphic novel called Ribbon illustrated by Ben Sears.
