Whirr – “Mumble” (Stereogum Premiere)
Whirr is the shoegaze project Nothing bassist Nick Bassett formed after leaving Deafheaven. (Bassett and Nothing founder Dominic Palermo also have a project called Death Of Lovers; busy guy!) Whirr’s second full-length, Sway, is coming this fall and was recorded at Oakland’s Atomic Garden with Sunbather producer Jack Shirley. It’s preceded today with the gorgeous yet ominous lead single “Mumble.” The song matches the genre’s inherent celestial qualities with a sense of impending doom, as if you’re staring into the future with a nearly overwhelming sense of uncertainty. Whether they’re singing about such matters is unclear because in keeping with the song’s title, they mumble. Either way, the sensations this song elicits are formidable, especially considering they get in, do their damage, and get out in well under three minutes. Immerse yourself in it below.
