Mirel Wagner – “The Dirt”
“The Dirt” is one of the most appropriate names imaginable for a Mirel Wagner song. The Ethiopian-born Finnish artist (and Band To Watch graduate) makes haunting, sepulchral folk music that sounds like it emerged from some primordial darkness. Her second album and Sub Pop debut, produced by Sasu Ripatti aka Vladislav Delay aka Luomo, is coming in August, and we’ve already heard the ghostly “Oak Tree.” “The Dirt” is more stark but equally captivating, a slow bluesy stomp that places Wagner’s powerfully mournful voice front and center.
