Stream Mirel Wagner When The Cellar Children See The Light Of Day
The Ethiopian-born Finnish folk singer Mirel Wagner makes music so grim and stark and haunted that it feels like it’s existed for a century. We made her a Band To Watch in 2012, a little while before she released her self-titled debut album, full of songs recorded in one take, with just Wagner’s voice and guitar. The Finish dance-music figure Sasu Ripatti, best known as Luomo, produced her new sophomore album When The Cellar Children See The Light Of Day but he kept the minimal feel of that first album intact, adding only subtle touches, like vocal layering that made a few already-spooky songs even spookier. We’ve posted the early tracks “Oak Tree” and “The Dirt,” and now you can stream the entire album over at NPR.
When The Cellar Children See The Light Of Day is out 8/12 on Sub Pop.
