DEATH – “We’re Gonna Make It” Video (Stereogum Premiere)
1970s Detroit protopunk trio DEATH went dark for a good long while — around three decades — but returned to prominence following their 2009 reunion and the release of forgotten ’70s demos via Drag City. DEATH didn’t garner too large a following in the ’70s, but are now seen as visionaries, thanks in part to the great 2012 documentary A Band Called Death, which traced the lives of the band’s founders — the Hackney brothers David, Bobby and Dannis — through their urban roots, eclectic music-making, and family-centric lives. “We’re Gonna Make It” is the last song David wrote with his brothers before he succumbed to lung cancer in 2000. The video is a montage of Hackney family photos and cuts from A Band Called Death, set to David’s gently sentimental remembrance. It was compiled by one of Bobby’s sons, who discovered the band’s old recordings in his family attic, and founded Rough Francis, a DEATH cover band, with his two brothers in 2008. Thus, the Hackney story comes full circle. Watch below.
