Nicole Atkins – “Dancing In The Dark” (Bruce Springsteen Cover)
Bruce Springsteen’s monumental LP Born In The U.S.A. turned 30 in June. In celebration, Lightning Rod Records is putting out Dead Man’s Town, a tribute album featuring indie rock and alt-country artists performing stripped-down versions of songs from the Boss’ biggest, most ’80s-sounding album. Following Low’s beautiful take on “I’m On Fire” (one of the best covers of a frequently covered song) comes a new rendition of “Dancing In The Dark” courtesy of singer-songwriter and New Jersey native Nicole Atkins. Atkins slows the song down, reducing its classic cheery synth riff to a quiet metronomic pulse accompanied by flourishes of keys and piano, her vocals bursting with barely restrained emotion.
