S – “Brunch”
The first song from Jenn Ghetto’s latest S album Cool Choices, “Vampires,” presented a shimmering uptempo take on melancholia. It was fantastic, as was Swim Good’s transformative remix. Now comes “Brunch,” another Cool Choices track that operates in the same emotional and sonic space as “Vampires” with the added bonus of immediately striking lyrics about coping with a nasty breakup. Ghetto’s fragile yet confident songwriting reminds me of Elliott Smith, and Chris Walla’s production is both recognizable and welcome. The Pacific Northwest has always been so good at making despondent longing sound so impossibly romantic, and that tradition continues here. Listen below.
Cool Choices is out 9/23 on Hardly Art. Pre-order it through the label, Amazon, or iTunes.
