Earl Boykins – “Lance Armstrong” (Stereogum Premiere)
Earlier this year, New Paltz-based band Earl Boykins released Friends, a driving collection of jangly punk rock aimed to sear while still upholding a sense of levity. They’ve cleaned up their sound for their new EP Everybody Likes Dogs, which is a sentiment that’s as agreeable as their music. Taking on the name of another famous athlete, “Lance Armstrong” is a warm and enveloping song that borders on twee and, for as confident as it sounds, it also betrays a sense of vulnerability and a cloying desire for connection. “I just needed a friend/ to help me see it to the end,” it goes before breaking into a chorus backed by angelic coos. Listen below.
Everybody Likes Dogs is out digitally and on cassette tape on 9/30 via Forged Artifacts.
