Philadelphia’s Little Big League have been kicking around for a few years — they released their great debut These Are Good People last summer via Tiny Engines and are now gearing up for album two with Run For Cover. “Tropical Jinx” is the title track from their new album and it’s a masterfully put together piece of ’90s throwback rock. One of LBL’s strengths is their ability to construct sprawling songs that rarely travel over three minutes — see the fantastic “Settlers” from their debut — and this one manages to clock in under two. The band’s cleaned up their sound a little bit, and that only makes Michelle Zauner’s arresting voice and clever turns of phrase come through more clearly. “You can’t decide if you want to love or be loved more/ and you chose wrong,” she sings at one point as warm guitars swell around her.
