S is the solo project of Jenn Ghetto, a former member of Carissa’s Weird (which also featured Band Of Horses frontman Ben Bridwell) and a mainstay of Seattle indie rock. Ghetto teamed with (now former) Death Cab For Cutie sonic guru Chris Walla for Cool Choices, a new album of heartsick pop songs delivered with crisp clarity and shimmering polish. It’s a gorgeous collection of gently sighed confessions, piercingly intimate yet propulsive and muscular. Ghetto sings with assurance and fragility in equal measure, her voice a moonbeam amidst crystalline guitars, jostling drums, and reverberating piano swells. In other words, Cool Choices is exactly the awesome result you’d expect from a gifted songwriter teaming with a deeply skilled producer.
