Restorations – “Misprint” (Stereogum Premiere)
Restorations have undergone some renovations since their origins as Philadelphia post-hardcore ragers — maybe not renovations so much as refinements. They’ve always been part of that storied chain from Springsteen to the Replacements to the Gaslight Anthem, slinging righteous barroom punk rock with grizzled vocals, a weary heart, and tremendous ambition. LP3 finds them channeling that legacy into larger-than-life epics, rolling up the #emorevival, decades of heartland rock, and the sweeping grandeur of grown-ass indie bands like the National into an epic sound that exists on the same spectrum as the Wrens and the Hold Steady but doesn’t sound quite like any other band. It’s easy to evoke reference points for this stuff but impossible to narrow down to a single genre or genealogy. “Misprint,” an album highlight featuring Beirut/The National collaborator Benjamin Lanz on trombone, sprawls like the sky and stomps over everything like a disenchanted monster. It’s a hell of a song, and you can hear it below.
