Last week, as part of their yearlong pre-release campaign, Weezer teased a bit of “The British Are Coming,” from their upcoming LP Everything Will Be Alright In The End. Today, the band made the song available to download with album pre-orders. As I wrote in the post for the song’s teaser, as far as I’m concerned, having heard the whole thing, Everything Will Be Alright In The End is hands-down Weezer’s best album since Pinkerton. However, the snippets and singles released thus far haven’t really provided evidence to back up my claim: I love “Cleopatra,” but “Back To The Shack” is an anomalous dud. Meanwhile, the two songs that remain available to the public only in snippet form — “Go Away” and “Lonely Girl” — are totally adequate Green Album-esque surf jams, but compared to Everything Will Be Alright In The End’s myriad highlights, they feel a bit minor. “The British Are Coming,” though, is a monster even among those aforementioned highlights. It’s the first EWBAITE single yet released by Weezer to fully capture the album’s majestic sound and scope. There are no hidden meanings to that title; the lyrics recount moments of the Revolutionary War from the perspective of a patriot soldier (or a re-enactor, or a history teacher doing Method). But Rivers Cuomo is singing as if he’s the embodiment of Paul Revere, all urgency and focus, and when he gets to the solo … that’s when the bayonets and cannons go off — the fireworks. Listen
