His Name Is Alive – “African Violet Casts A Spell”
Since their debut on 4AD Records in 1990, experimental rock group His Name Is Alive have been steadily churning out EPs and full-length records, never letting more than four years pass between each release. Although the discography of the Michigan-based project extends over more than two decades with surprising consistency, leader and founder Warren Defever is the only constant member of the band. Over the years, Defever has enlisted the help of various musicians to contribute to his releases while maintaining the core that identity runs throughout all of his work. On October 28, His Name is Alive will self-release their new album, Tecuciztecatl, a self-described rock opera that follows a woman’s efforts to kill the demon baby growing inside of her while not harming its innocent twin. “African Violet Casts A Spell,” the first single from the upcoming album, finds His Name Is Alive continuing on their characteristic tangent of bizarre arrangements: The deft plucking of an acoustic guitar riffs joyously and eerily behind a wall of chilling vocals and rhythmic puddle-splashing.
