Maxo – “Not That Bad” (Feat. GFOTY)
Maxo is a Brooklyn-based producer whose most famous track is probably his remix of SAINT PEPSI’s “Fiona Coyne.” Now Maxo has teamed up with GFOTY, one of the most unique voices in the jittery pop collective PC Music. GFOTY is best known for her distinctive sung-spoken vocals (for evidence, check out her thrilling guest spot on SOPHIE’s “Hard“). That voice is more raw and human than nearly anything else you’ll find in the PC Music scene, musical or vocal, and the tweaks she gives her vocals are as detailed and intricate as any of A.G. Cook’s beats. I love how she’ll make her words bend just at the edges of syllables, or keep her primary vocal track clear while quieter copies are completely warped and bent in the distant parts of the mix. On “Not That Bad,” Maxo’s cheery, sunny production doesn’t quite hit the bungee-chord bounce of someone like SOPHIE, and GFOTY doesn’t deliver the chaotic highs of her own “My Song” or “Don’t Wanna/Let’s Do It,” but that’s a good thing. These artists are stretching out into new things, and the results are exciting. Now if we can just get a follow-up to GF’s Secret Mix…
