No Devotion – “10,000 Summers” (Stereogum Premiere)
There aren’t too many bands with weirder stories than No Devotion. Geoff Rickly, the former frontman for New Jersey post-hardcore greats Thursday, leads the band. (He’s also the frontman for United Nations, whose feral, majestic The Next Four Years is among the year’s best punk albums.) But all the other members of the band come from Lostprophets, the Welsh post-grunge stars whose singer, Ian Watkins, was sent to prison for unspeakable sex crimes. (Watkins isn’t in No Devotion, obviously, but all the other former Lostprophets are. Rickly told us how the band came together in this feature.) As No Devotion, Rickly and the former Lostprophets make grand, life-affirming, festival-ready synth-rock. They releeased their debut single “Stay b/w “Eyeshadow” earlier this summer; the A-side was a massive hit in Belarus, while its B-side was big in Japan. Later this month, they’ll release “10,000 Summers,” their monster second single They recorded it with At The Drive-In/City And Colour producer Alex Newport, while indie O.G. and past Thursday collaborator Dave Fridmann mixed it. Its title track is a tremendous, surging song with a grand, towering festival-shout-along chorus. Listen to it below.
“10,000 Summers” is out 10/27 on Rickly’s own Collect Records. No Devotion will play their first American show at Brooklyn’s Glasslands 10/28, with Ricky Eat Acid, Black Clouds, and Creepoid opening.
