Sleepy Cheese – “The Glory” (Stereogum Premiere)
Sleepy Cheese is the new project of someone that goes by the name Sky Traceable. He recorded his debut EP while working the graveyard shift at a local dump. “I come up with a lot of my songs while rummaging through the garbage,” he told me over e-mail. “Have I mentioned my cool collection of found objects? I found a really rad miniature pincher taxidermy figure under a full pizza once. Win-win situation.” He followed that up with: “But really, this music comes from a really dark period in my life.” His bedroom recordings are glowering and dense — spooky even, which is appropriate since the EP is set to be released on Halloween. “The Glory’ cuts through like a serrated knife, choppy and irregular. Towards the end of the song, a voice is looped over itself until it becomes a series of unintelligible mumbles. This is sludgy and slow music, and it takes a few listens to really sink in, but that only makes it better. Listen below.
