Kal Marks – “It Was A Very Hard Year”
In case last year’s Life Is Murder didn’t tip you off, Boston indie-rockers Kal Marks have a bit of a negative streak, one that was reinforced by “Zimmerman,” their fantastic angry single from the upcoming Just A Lonely Fart EP. The next song they’re sharing from the project continues that tradition of funneling frustration into explosive guitar music. “It Was A Very Hard Year” is slower than “Zimmerman”; it sounds like a gnarled Deer Tick track plodding along in sludge, accented with psychedelic keyboard spirals. It’s also more personal, as frontman Carl Shane explained to Impose:
The song is about a car accident I was in. It was a moment in my life where I really thought I was gonna die and the times following it I felt kind of lost. But the song is also about using your own horrific experience to relate to other folks. We all have bad days.
As usual, there is a humongous emotional payoff in the form of an aggressive instrumental onslaught. These guys know their way around a cathartic outburst. Hear “It Was A Very Hard Year” below.
