Liz Phair – “Ho Ho Ho” (Stereogum Premiere)
Liz Phair is the person responsible for Exile In Guyville and Whip-Smart, two of the point-blank greatest albums in indie rock history, but she’s been quiet in recent years. The forthcoming Amazon holiday playlist All Is Bright features Christmas songs from people like the Rosebuds, Lucinda Williams, and Beth Orton. It’s also got the first new Liz Phair song in years — since, if I’m not mistaken, her 2012 A.R. Rahman collab “Dotted Line.” Below, listen to Phair’s acerbic holiday song “Ho Ho Ho” and read some words about it from Phair.
Phair says:
I’ve always wanted to write a dystopian Christmas song. Holidays are a time of emotional turbulence, of unpredictable highs and lows. The retail and advertising sectors bill it as the greatest time of the year, but some seasons you are saddled with a real clunker! I find that both touching and funny. I tried to contrast chirpy, cheery elements with a depressing story line, a là David Sedaris’s “SantaLand Diaries,” the Waitresses’ “Christmas Wrapping,” and that timeless classic, “Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer.”
All Is Bright will be up on Amazon’s Prime Music 11/20, and it’ll be free to stream for all Amazon Prime members.
