SZA – “Sobriety”
I was pretty underwhelmed by SZA’s major label debut Z after getting excited over the promise of her early string of singles and EPs. Something just didn’t connect with me there, but I’m really feeling “Sobriety,” a new single that the up-and-comer dropped yesterday. She’s leaning into her funkier side, sounding almost like a more accessible version of THEESatisfaction. It’s a good look for her, and one that she’s flirted with before, but she gives into it fully here. Her voice sounds silky smooth, cranking out perceptive lines about addiction and pain while still having an underlying message of positivity. The track has a list of five producers deep (including Thudercat, whose wonderful bass work you can hear throughout) but still feels very much like SZA. Listen below.
